Sweden to Host Historic NATO Ministerial Meeting in Helsingborg

HELSINGBORG — Sweden has officially announced that it will host the spring Meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs this May, a historic first for the country since joining the Alliance. The meeting, scheduled for May 21–22 in the city of Helsingborg, is viewed as a high-level demonstration of Sweden’s commitment to its role as a NATO Ally.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard emphasized that the event is a crucial stepping stone toward the NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey, later this July. "Hosting a high-level meeting for the Alliance is a demonstration of Sweden’s ambitions to be an active and constructive NATO Ally," Stenergard stated.

The agenda for the Helsingborg meeting is expected to focus on several high-priority security issues, including:

Defence Expenditure: Following up on the commitments made during the NATO Summit in The Hague last year.

Support for Ukraine: Coordinating ongoing military and humanitarian assistance for the Ukrainian defense effort.

Regional Security: Strengthening the Alliance’s posture in Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea region.

As the host nation, Sweden is collaborating closely with NATO headquarters on practical arrangements. In addition to the collective sessions, Minister Stenergard is slated to hold a series of bilateral talks with key counterparts to further align security policies within the Baltic and Nordic regions. Media representatives have been advised that special accreditation through NATO is required to cover the proceedings, with a deadline set for May 6, 2026.
